What is PKU?
PKU stands for Phenylketonuria. It is a metabolic disorder that impairs a person’s ability to metabolize phenylalanine. This means that those with PKU follow a low protein diet and drink a supplement (“formula,” “milk”) to get their daily protein. Check out my About Me page for more information about PKU.
What does Kuvan do?
Kuvan is a medication that comes in pill form. It does not replace the need for formula, however it can allow some people with PKU to increase the amount of protein they can eat in a day. You do have to go through a trial process to determine if you are a responder. If you want to learn more about Kuvan you can check out Kuvan’s website. If you want to know if Kuvan will work for you, speak directly with your doctor.
